"History is written by the winners."
"We WON the war!"
One thing that occurred to me long ago is that the Devil (Satan,
Beelzebub, Antichrist, etc.) is EXTREMELY subtle, if "he" does in fact
exist. Misguided kids who paint pentagrams on dumpsters and sacrifice
black cats on Halloween have no f---ing idea who, or what, this entity
– REAL EVIL – is, or does.
Neither do most "Christians," especially fundamentalists, since the
dumpster/pentagram thing scares them to death and the cat deal really
horrifies them.
In C. S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia a servant of the evil White
Witch's general, Tash (Satan), is not condemned by the REAL Lion King,
Aslan. Why? Because he abided by his oath to serve, and did so, to the
end. Aslan tells him that he could not have done so accept through his
(Aslan's) power and authority. Aslan goes on to say that those who
commit atrocities in HIS name actually served Tash (Satan). Tash's
servant, in this case, was an honorable "man" who recognized the truth
once it was presented to him. Aslan absolves him of all guilt and
welcomes him into "the kingdom."
Ironically some "Christians" take great offence at this component of
Lewis' work. But if they ever bothered to read their own sacred book,
the big black one that they call the infallible "Word of God," they
would discover the very same story in Jesus' encounter with the two
thieves, next to him, on crosses.
And so, while these kids are painting pentagrams on dumpsters, REAL
EVIL goes practically unnoticed. An aside here is that there were more
"Satan worshipers," in my home state of Oklahoma – during the 1980's,
than anywhere else in the world. It is said, of Oklahoma towns, "there
is a church on every corner." Oral Roberts University, Tulsa's number
one employer, is here. So are Rhema Bible College (Ream Ya Bable
College) and a host of mega churches. "For every action there is an
equal and opposite REACTION!"
REAL EVIL, on the other hand, subtly twists words and ideas into
something which "sounds" true but which is truly false.
For example: While waging an all-out war on the masses, particularly
with regard to their constitutional rights, "one" might claim to be
"pertectin' thuh Mercan people."
REAL EVIL might incite a people to war by repeatedly saying things
like "yeller-cake urainyum," or "dubyaMD's," or "luminum tubes," or
"nukular weapons of mass deestruckshun."
REAL EVIL would, undoubtedly, suggest that we turn to "clean, safe
nukular energy" to rid us of our "dependence on Middle Eastern oil."
Why are we in Iraq? SHIT – I forgot – it's DEMOCRACY stupid!
REAL EVIL would propose that the best way to save pristine wilderness
areas is by opening them up for oil drilling – that way they can pay
for themselves and be around for future generations.
REAL EVIL would suggest that, "It is essential to undertake the
research needed to evaluate a range of U.S. options that may prove
essential in deterring or neutralizing future threats," by building
"smaller, low-yield nukular weapons." These new weapons could have
cute and seductive names like "bunker busters." REAL EVIL would show
these bombs on T.V. blowing up ONLY THE BAD GUYS with laser/razor
precision.
And finally, REAL EVIL would insist that war is "winnable."
War is not winnable. Not under any circumstances. Ever.
The same fundamentalists, alluded to earlier, are quick to point out
that Jesus said, "You will always have wars and rumors of wars." They
quote this as though it was a prophetic utterance from, none other
than, the Son of God Himself. The same "religious right"
republican-backing yahoes invoke the line "the poor will be with you
always" to justify comletely ignoring the plight of the less
fortunate. Well…I've read the big book and I didn't find their Jesus
in it anywhere. I looked. They've gotta helluva Jesus. The "wars and
rumors of wars" statement, as well as the one about the poor, were
simply observations about human nature by a REALLY smart guy – NOT to
be confused with inevitable prophecy.
You cannot "win" a war. It is impossible. War destroys the
environment. A Navy Admiral calculated that Iraq now has the
equivalent radioactivity of a quarter of a million Nagasaki nuclear
bombs. Iraqi babies are being born without limbs, eyes, or even faces
in some cases. Good thing it's just a sand dune floating on oil isn't
it? Outrageous radioactive spikes were measured as far away as Britain
when U.S. forces started busting bunkers.
War makes wreckage out of human lives – not just the 3,000 (plus) dead
American soldiers in Iraq – but their families as well. It makes human
wreckage out of 22,000 disabled vets from THIS war – and their
families too. The young wives of our soldiers have reported a "burning
sensation" when making love to their returning husbands. The Bush
administration initially forbade VA hospitals from checking for
possible radioactive poisoning of our troops. I do not know what the
current status of this order is but one must ask why it was ever
forbidden to properly diagnose a soldier by an administration that
accused so many Americans of not abiding by the yellow-ribboned slogan
of "support our troops."
According to a study by Johns Hopkins University over six hundred
thousand Iraqi's are DEAD because of their "liberation." Does that
sound "liberated" to you? Maybe it is in some sort of strange,
existential, way…I guess it is.
REAL EVIL would claim that you dishonor the dead when you cease to
fund, or fight, a war.
We "won" World War II. Half a million (500,000) U.S. troops DIED in
that war. "The Allies," collectively, lost fifty-one million lives.
We "lost" Vietnam. Congress, against the designs of that era's lying
President, nobly stopped funding that war – it ONLY KILLED 58,000 of
our young American boys and girls.
The REAL TRUTH is that the "losers," in war, are ALL of those who
participate...and history is written by those who survived.
I dared to approach The Lion and say, "There's so much condemnation,
especially of people who don't seem so bad to me, by those who claim
to know you. And often those, who claim no allegiance to you
whatsoever, seem to be doing the better work. I must respectfully ask
you what the difference is between you and Tash."
And Aslan growled so that the earth shook (but his wrath was not
against me) and he said, "REAL EVIL and I are opposites…unless your
desire had been for truth you would not have sought so long and so
truly. For all find what they truly seek."
