"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich." -- John F. Kennedy

End Hunger and Poverty

Racist Reasons

Posted by Deminora Witz on 18 November 2005

Racial profiling in airports does not provide safety; not necessarily. For the color of one's skin is not a factor in whether they will blow up a building or light something on fire.

Why are we operating on the assumption that because an Arab woman is traveling on an airplane in the U.S., that she might have a bomb, or some sort of explosive? What about the embittered white, executive men, with their bloodshot eyes, mysterious packages, and cold demeanors; are they not just as likely to detonate a bomb, as the Arab women with her children, if not more so?

Bush has put homeland security into effect, in an effort to create an "us against them" mentality, however, the people that we are alienating are usually, our own. African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Arabs; they are all discriminated against in this "land of the free" What we really must ask is who are we trying to fight? People of all races, ethnicity, and religions have been born, raised in America and declared it their own country.

Honestly, this humiliation of people who call the U.S. their country, can be interpreted as nothing less than blatant racism, being excused on some bogus anti-terror explanation. This is one more way that the U.S. is making racism excusable, by saying that one particular group, or a few particular groups put everyone else at risk because of the color of their skin, or the god that they pray to.

The reason for all of this racist profiling, is to protect "freedom" but the only freedom that is being protected is the freedom to humiliate, alienate, and subjugate people who happen to have a different skin color from the Norman Rockwell standard, of blue eyes, blonde hair, and rosy cheeks. Until the U.S. can ensure the freedom of its own people, from the oppression that is racism, how can we justify trying to save freedom from some obscure clutches?
