Soya Lecithin and omega 3-6-9 during pregnancy
Dear Anai,
My wife has started taking a couple supplements now that she is pregnant. They include a prenatal vitamins, Soya Lecithin, and omega 3-6-9. She started taking Soya Lecithin and omega 3-6-9 through the advice of a friend who said it would help aid in brain and cardiovascular development. We have not been able to verify this anywhere.
Our question is first and foremost, is this safe. Second, does it indeed help with brain development?
Sincerely,
Nerdline
Dear Nerdline,
Let's start with the warnings - Omega 3 and omega 6 oils should not be taken if the patient is taking anti-blood clotting drugs such as Coumarin, Heparin, and Warfarin. Some fish oils may not be suitable for people who are known to have allergies to fish.
Secondly, people have many ideas for a pregnant women. These ideas are sometimes very helpful, while other suggestions are questionable. My advice to you, would be to bring your wife to a qualified nutritionist who is better able to evaluate her need for these supplements.
While we, as adults, are able to take supplements (sometimes without incident), pregnancy is a different story. Diet is very important during the pregnancy so fiddling with anything more than healthy food and prenatal vitamins could spell trouble.
This is not to say that the supplements you inquiring about are "unhealthy", but rather questionable during pregnancy. Seek your OB/Gyn's opinion as well as that of a licensed nutritionist before doing anything out of the ordinary.
Thank you for writing and congratulations on your new pregnancy!
