Tips for easing morning sickness
Dear Anai,
I'm 26 years old and in my 9th week of pregnancy. I'm concerned about the
baby's health. I can't keep any food down long enough. What can I do?
Thank you,
Dara
Dear Dara,
Researchers say that morning sickness is a sign of healthy pregnancy. It
typically occurs in the first trimester and subsides shortly after. Some women
have it all throughout their pregnancy, mild or severe (known as Hyperemesis
Gravidarum), while others never experience it at all.
Many women are concerned, because they are nauseated, they will not able to
eat a well-balanced diet. They reach for the crackers and breads knowing that
will settle their stomach long enough to eat something shortly thereafter.
Whatever works for each individual is fine, as long as there is a prenatal
vitamin involved that can pick up the slack. (Note: Taking the prenatal vitamin
at night, helps with morning sickness, as sometimes the vitamin can be blamed
for some queasiness).
If you have maintained a diet that is healthy and balanced, you already
get most of the vitamins and minerals you need naturally from the foods you eat.
But you will need the prenatal vitamin for the required daily amounts of folic
acid, calcium, and iron to sustain a healthy pregnancy.
Thank you for writing,
