Is B6 and Aspirin Safe During Pregnancy?
Dear Anai,
I have good news. I just got a positive on my pregnancy test! Hurray! I have been taking B6 and 81mg of aspirin each day, and I don't know if I'm supposed to keep taking them now that I'm pregnant. My doctor won't be available until tomorrow.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated,
Abrielle
Dear Abrielle,
Congratulations on your new pregnancy!
If you were taking the 81 mg of aspirin daily to increase your chances of conceiving, then you were to stop taking it the day after ovulation. If you are taking it under your doctor's advice and supervision for a blood clotting disorder or for any other medical reason, then consult with your doctor tomorrow before discontinuing your regimen.
As for the Pyridoxine (B6), you will need your doctor's approval, again. Pyridoxine is used by some women to combat morning sickness, however, it is a supplement I would never recommend, since you get all you need in your prenatal vitamin.
You can get Pyridoxine naturally in foods such as bananas, brewers yeast, brown rice, carrots, avocados, and whole grains. The RDA for vitamin B6 is 2 mg per day. Bear in mind that a majority of B-complex formulas on the market contain anywhere between 10 to 75 mg of B6.
Consumption of doses above 2 grams per day can lead to severe neurological damage. Taking Pyridoxine as a supplement is unneccesary, even during pregnancy. Your diet should sustain you and offer you more than enough B6 daily.
Fortified cereals, like Total Brand, have 100% of all required vitamins and minerals needed on a daily basis. Imagine eating that and taking a supplement. It quickly adds up and at times - becomes too much.
Congratulations again! I wish you a happy and healthy nine months ahead!
