AnaiRhoads.org - The State Department announced Tuesday that the United States will contribute $19.5 million to Liberia.
The money is part of a $114 million contribution originally offered by President Bush back in February of this year. The U.S. hopes the funds will help heal the war-torn country after fourteen years of civil battle.
Partial funding will be divided between multi-national agencies, the United Nations Children's Fund and the Red Cross. The Red Cross is expected to take the biggest bite at $4.5 million.
The refugees that escaped the drawn out conflict will have $11 million to support their return home.
Civil war and mismanagement of government compromised Liberia's economy over the years. To make matters worse, the United Nations imposed sanctions on Liberia in 2001. An arms embargo and even a strict travel ban was placed on government officials due to the country's support for rebels.
