AnaiRhoads.org - Activists plan to meet in theatres across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia this weekend to bring awareness to the issue of global warming and to discuss the new movie, "The Day After Tomorrow".
"The world's scientific community is nearly unanimous that human activity is accelerating the pace of global warming and raising the threat of severe climate disruption. We hope everyone who goes to see 'The Day After Tomorrow' will also take an hour or two this weekend to become more educated on the issue, and take positive action to address this very real threat to our health, property and safety," Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN).
Tidwell will be on hand to answer questions relating to this sensitive and often ignored topic. CCAN is one among several organisations that will be available throughout the area to hand out educational leaflets.
"While the movie compresses and dramatises the growing threat of severe climate disruption into a two hour period, many of the disastrous consequences that are implied are possible if we continue to rely on fossil fuels as our primary source of energy," Tidwell said.
Earlier this month, Maryland's Montgomery and Prince George's Counties purchased the largest local wind power of any district. Maryland Govenor Ehrlich signed a law Wednesday that requires Maryland utilities to increase development of clean electricity.
