Veriana Media - French President Jacques Chirac responded in outrage at U.S. President George W. Bush's suggestion that Turkey be included into the European Union Monday.

"It is a bit like if I told the United States how they should manage their relations with Mexico," Chirac exclaimed during the NATO summit in Instanbul, Turkey.

"As Turkey meets the EU standards for membership, the European Union should begin talks that will lead to full membership for the Republic of Turkey," Bush told reporters during his visit in Ireland shortly before his stop into Ankara, Turkey.

Many believe Bush's comments before his scheduled visit to Turkey were designed to appease the country, as several protests and threats arose against the U.S. President. However, most are convinced the appeal to the EU on Turkey's behalf is politically motivated.
