AnaiRhoads.org - Ten days after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pulled the plug on over-the-counter sales of Levonorgestrel (Morning After Pill) in America, Canada's Health Minister Pierre Pettigrew agreed Wednesday to supply Canadians with the emergency contraception.
The Canadian government, along with with Pettigrew, agreed that Levonorgestrel may benefit women who seek to terminate a (possible) unwanted pregnancy during the pre-implantation period. The pill must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, however there is a failure rate associated with the medication.
Levonorgestrel has been on the OTC market across most parts of Europe but only has been permitted in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The pill will now be distributed across Canada without a prescription.
