Irregular hCG Levels

Dear Anai,

My wife is 7 weeks pregnant now, starting 8th week. In the ultrasound on end of 6th week, the size of the baby was less than average. Then, my wife went through few blood tests to check the hCG level and the results were not very promising. [on 06/25 the hCG level was 1085; on 06/28 it was 785; on 06/30 it was 675] Instead of the hCG level doubling, they started decline a bit, in the two day window. The doctor doesnt think the pregnancy is going to last longer. However, she neither has any bleeding nor feels anything different.

Today we did another blood test and it has increased to 1,430. It has increased from last the last visit. The doctor still thinks, it is not a normal pregnancy. We have scheduled a consulting appointment with the doctor tomorrow.

Could my wife still be pregnant? Have you heard of any similar case, please let me know what to expect?

Thanks,

Dear Leo,

Let me first start by saying that I am very sorry you having such an emotional experience with this pregnancy. I have been there, and I truly wish it on no one.

As for your wife's pregnancy, this is something that can be tricky. Any drop in hCG levels is a sign of trouble. The sudden hike in levels is highly unusual as well.

My suggestion would be to see a different doctor and have her levels checked again. Compare the levels and see if it may be a lab issue or simply human error. One can never tell with situations such as these.

Please keep me posted on her blood test results. My thoughts are with you.

Thank you for writing,
