ESHRE Conducts Conference on Single Embryo Transfer
by Anai Rhoads Veriana Media
Fertility specialists at the European Society of Human Reproduction and
Embryology (ESHRE) held a conference Monday to discuss recent research that show
1 to 2 embryos have the same failure and success rate as the multiple embryo
method.
Dr. Jim Catt of Sydney IVF led the research which employed a total of 382
patients. Women under the age of 38 who were assigned to only two embryos
transferred in one cycle of treatment had a live birth rate of 50 percent. While
the number dropped with those who had only one embryo, doctors were pleased to
discovered a strong 36 percent success rate.
For women who were unsuccessful with the initial treatment, and had a
frozen embryo for their second treatment saw a 60 percent success rate.
The practice of multiple embryo transfers can result in most and in some
cases all of the embryos to have a chance of survival. This is both dangerous to
the mother and babies involved. This study holds a great deal of promise and
advancement in the IVF community.
