AnaiRhoads.org - The United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced Tuesday that they have
reached 98 percent of their goal in vaccinating Bangladeshi
children this past September.
Approximately 1.3 million children, 9 out of 10, were inoculated
successfully against the Measles.
The project involved the setting up
of 4,500 health centres, 1,600 healthcare workers, and more than 15,000
dedicated volunteers.
“Measles can be deadly to children and infants, especially when it is
contracted during times of crisis, such as the recent earthquake in
Pakistan,” UNICEF Bangladesh Representative Louis-Georges Arsenault
said from the agency’s offices.
The agency will seek out at least 300,000 volunteers to complete the
second part of their campaign to vaccinate 33.5 million children in the
south Asian country. The department hopes to begin this phase between 25th
February – March 16th 2006.
It is said that this upcoming campaign will be considered the largest
vaccination effort in history to combat Measles.
