Pesticides on Fruit

Dear Anai,

What is the best way to clean grapes? I want to remove the pesticides without breaking grape skin.

Thank you,

Mimi

Answer:

Pesticides and insecticides on food have been big problem and there seems to be an unwillingness to change farming and production methods. While it saves crops and encourages healthy growth by eliminating insects that would normally feast on the plant, it is has also put us at risk.

Wash all fruits and vegetables carefully once you get home. For the grapes, grab a post and put them in without the stems. Pour warm water over, rinse and drain to remove floating debris. Refill the pot with warm water and add 1 teaspoon vinegar per litre of water in the pot. Allow the grapes to stay in the water for at least 10 minutes before rising and draining into your colander.

Look for fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables. If in doubt of the product, check the company out that has grown the food. Some may claim organic but use other chemicals.

Thank you for writing!
