Are Forceps Dangerous?

Dear Anai,

I have a question about forceps during delivery. Should I be worried about injury to my baby in any way? Forceps are sharp aren't they?

Thanks,

Phoebe from Chicago, IL., USA

Dear Phoebe,

Most doctors prefer to use a vacuum extractor to assist in deliveries these days. There are still many doctors and hospitals that rely on forceps who report few injuries to the infant. It really depends on the doctor's skills, but generally there are more scrapes, cuts and bruises to the vaginal wall than those found on the baby during the delivery.

Although forceps aren't the main choice of instruments to assist a delivery, they are often nearby in case of emergencies. If, for example, the placenta separates from the uterine wall during the pushing phase, the patient will no doubt be forced into immediate delivery to save the baby. When one looks at the timing it takes to prepare for a C-section, it is without question a race again time. The forceps are available to help save the infant in time, thus still needed.

Be sure to discuss methods of delivery with your doctor and the hospital you plan to attend. Clear communication of your needs is crucial to ensuring a safer labour and delivery.

Thank you for writing!
