Vasectomy Reversals
Dear Anai,
My husband and I are considering him getting a vasectomy right now. I am pregnant with my third child, and we are pretty sure we are done. The problem is, we are not positive. Are vasectomies reversible, and if so, what is the success rate? Would you suggest getting a vasectomy if you are not 100% sure you are done? Help! I am so confused!
Carissa
Dear Carissa,
Your best bet would be to begin researching hospitals and doctors in your local area that perform vasectomies while you are still pregnant.
Vasectomies are simple to perform. The healing process takes roughly 2-5 days depending on age and general health. Within 2 weeks the man can resume sexual activity.
Vasectomy works by cutting a vital tube that carries the sperm. This can be done cauterising, cutting or even tying the vas deferens tube so that no sperm can pass through. It has a sterilisation success rate of 99.9%.
This one time decision does not interfere with erection, spontaneity or ejaculation. There is only some discomfort during the procedure itself, but that subsides shortly after.
There will be two or three tests performed on the semen to see if there are any sperm present before the vasectomy can be considerd complete.
Unfortunately, some vasectomy reversals are unsuccessful. So making this decision can not be for temporary means. The procedure is done for men who 100% do not want children now or ever.
You will need to sit down with your husband and your primary doctor to discuss this further before attempting something you will later regret.
Thank you for writing!
