"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich." -- John F. Kennedy

Can the pill help you ovulate?

Dear Anai,

When using a method of birth control such as provera or your regular birth control pills to regulate your period, does that also help you to ovulate?

Thanks,

Fayth

Dear Fayth,

Birth control pills help regulate a woman's cycle. The pill also functions to assist in other areas, but one of them is not to help you ovulate.

The pill puts your ovaries "to sleep" in a dormant state. It then provides a secondary safety mechanism by thickening the uterine lining in the event that an egg has been released and fertilised, the egg will not stand a chance of implantation.

Thank you for writing!
