Norplant - Pros and Cons
Dear Anai,
Can you tell me some information on Norplant? I'm trying to decided which birth control method would work for me. I'm looking for something easy. Thank you in advance for your help. Rach from Wisconsin
Answer:
There are good points and bad points to Norplant. It is up to the individual whether the benefits outweigh the risks. On the up side, Norplant assists in protection against uterine cancer.
Norplant works within 24 hours of insertion. It works by releasing progesterone into the bloodstream. There are six tubes, that are no bigger than average match sticks. They are inserted under the skin, in the upper arm area. They are effective for about five years, but can be removed by a doctor at your request, at any time. Once they are taken out, you are able to try for pregnancy after three full menstrual cycles.
The side effects are range from hair loss to decreased sexual desire. Acne was noted as one of the biggest complaints by women while using Norplant. If you are currently on medication for Epilepsy, note that it may decrease Norplant's function as a solid form of birth control. For women with liver disease, high blood pressure or previous to current cancer, Norplant is not recommended.
Since Norplant is a long term method of birth control, it is advised that you ask for a birth control pill that contains a high level of Progestin. This way, you will be able to see if you are allergic for example beforehand. Once you feel comfortable about using Norplant, make sure to tell your doctor immediately if you experience any abnormal bleeding or cramping, blurred vision, unusual headaches, and if you see any swelling in the area where the implants are. That could imply an infection that needs immediate attention.
