Missed a Pill - Lost Cause?

Dear Anai,

I have a 20 month old son, and have been on the pill since he was 2 months old. I read on this web site that if you miss a pill to double up the next day but how many times can you do that in one month and the pills still be effective?

I have just been told that you can only do that once a month and that if it happens again your pills are null and void for that month, and that you have to wait for your cycle and start a new pack. Is this true?

I forget about my pill a lot on the weekends and really would like to know what risks I am at, we are not ready for another child.

Thank you! Your response will be greatly appreciated.

Ryane

Dear Ryane,

Understandably you are concerned about another pregnancy so soon after just having your son. You were wise to seek birth control quickly and have shown great responsibility.

As for your question - no, it is not a lost cause if you double up more than once during a pack. When you miss a day and double up, you are effectively continuing your birth control since the level of hormone is still steady in the blood stream.

Keep in mind that not all of the days are "active" pills. Most are sugar pills that only serve a purpose to remind you to take the pill daily. Just remember to double up on the active pills but never exceed three pills.

All in active pills need not be doubled. Just take the pill on next day assigned in your pack.

Thank you for writing!
