"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich." -- John F. Kennedy

End Hunger and Poverty

Want to get off the pill, but how?

Dear Anai,

I'm on Levlen 28 and I just started my third month this past Sunday.

I hate being on the pill. It's making me very moody. I want to just throw out the rest of the pack but I'm worried about getting pregnant, not what I need right now.

I have had sex three times since Sunday. I keep remembering something about the fact that sperm lives in the body for a certain amount of time. What should I do?

Thank you,

Sugarlily

Dear Sugarlily,

It takes some for the pill's hormones to level out in the body once you are on it, and once you are off it it takes time for your body to recover as well. If you are on the sugar pills (they don't do anything at all!) then the intercourse you had would have little effect on conception. Remember, once you get off the pill - you will not know when you ovulate. You may not even get a period for months (in some cases).

Use condoms until you are ready to explore other birth control options. Many forget that the pill does not protect against STDs (except for herpes and HPV). If you are unsure, take the pill until the end of this cycle but continue to use condoms.

See your doctor and tell him/her that this pill is not working for you. You may feel better on another brand or strength.

Thank you for writing,
