Forgot to take the pill, what do I do?
Dear Anai,
Here's my situation.. I have been on the pill for almost 3 years. I just missed two pills, what should I do? Take both and today's at once or
skip my pack for this month?
Answer: The birth control pill has three weeks that are effective in preventing pregnancy. The fourth week is just a sugar pill; nothing as far as hormones whatsoever.
This method is designed to help the women keep track of her days and pills, not to mention getting in the habit of taking it once a day.
Note: Skipping 2 or more pills can result in loss of menses for the new cycle. Always test to confirm you are not pregnant. Many women do
not have regular cycles once they stop or start the birth control pill. It is not uncommon for you miss your period or have a very light
period when you miss 2 or more pills. If you miss more than two periods while on the birth control pill (after you have missed 2 - 3 pills
in a row) see your doctor.
Here are the typical guidelines to follow in your situation:
- When you miss a pill, double the very next day.
- If you forgot to take two pill (days) in a row, take both the day you remember.
- The days following this should have only one pill as usual
- If you forgot 2 pills in a row in the third week of your cycle, take one pill as normal.
If you forgot 3 or more in a row during the first three weeks of your cycle, do not triple the pills in one day.
Throw out the pack. Use a condom until you begin your menstrual cycle again.
