Birth Control: Amoxicillin and the Birth Control Pill

Dear Anai,

Does Amoxicillin affect the pill and how?

Thank you,

Mrs. Ward

Mrs. Ward,

Amoxicillin, Augmentin, Ampicillin, Penicillin, and all other antibiotics can interfere with the birth control pill. This is something that your doctor and pharmacist should have you about prior to taking the medication.

Antibiotics make it difficult for your body to absorb the hormones from the pill. Some antibiotics can even dilute the hormones, releasing them from the body at a rapid pace.  If you do not have your period in the next two days, test and see. The possibility of pregnancy is there.

In the future, use condoms during antibiotic therapy in order to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Be sure to discuss this with your doctor, and inquire why he or she did not forewarn you that pregnancy could result when mixing the two medications. In the very least, your pharmacist should have picked up on it when you filled out your prescription.

Thank you for writing,
