Previously I have used an antibiotic containing trimethoprim but is this (or ANY antibiotic...) safe to use if I am pregnant? Answered: Trimethoprim is the generic name of Bactrim. Other names for Bactrim are Cotrim, Septra, and Sulfamethoxazole. Bactrim is a combination-type antibiotic typically prescribed for urinary tract infection (UTI) and for bronchitis. Since there are serious reactions to a chemical called Sulfamethoxazole in Bactrim, frequent blood tests are required for those with a history. Unfortunately, there is no solid evidence for or against the use of Bactrim in pregnant women. If you are planning to become pregnant, or are already pregnant, you must notify your doctor immediately. This antibiotic appears in breast milk.
