  • Safety of Tanning Beds

    Dear Anai,

I'm in my first trimester, and need to look my best for an upcoming wedding we plan to attend. Can I tan in one of those self-tanning beds? Are they safe for pregnancy?

Answer: Tanning beds are not safe for anyone, let alone during a pregnancy. The risks involved increase after only 10 minutes of use. The UV radiation is intensified with tanning beds and lamps. Just one session is equivalent to hours of tanning on the beach.

Tanning beds or lamps employ UV (ultraviolet) light, which are similar to the UVA and UVB rays we always hear about from the sun. Even if your salon claims their beds are using UVA (which carries a slightly less risk than UVB), know that all ultraviolet rays carry risks.

Eye damage: Overexposure can harm the retina and cornea, leading to eye problems and cataracts. This can happen even if your eyes are closed, or wearing sunglasses.

Skin damage: Whether indoors or outdoors, the sun may lead to premature aging, wrinkles, leathery skin, and freckling.

Skin cancer: Tanning may be linked to malignant melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Immunity: Some studies show that tanning beds and lamps have a significant negative effect on one's immune system. This can affect an unborn child by increasing the mother's chances for illnesses and infections.
