Skin Care Part 3Pruritic Urticarial Papsules and Plaques of Pregnancy (PUPP) Pruritic urticarial papsules and plaques of pregnancy (known as Polymorphic Eruption of Pregnancy in Europe) is basically a rash on the skin that consists of raised red patches over the thighs, buttocks and abdomen. It is more common in first pregnancies and usually begins in the latter part of the second trimster. This patchy rash usually develops on the abdomen near the bellybutton area, then spreads to the thighs and extremities. It can spread to the rest of the body, but rarely involves the face. This rash is not contagious and does not harm your unborn fetus in any way. For some women the itching can become so severe they seek medical treatment from a dermatologist. Treatments include oatmeal baths, Cortaid (cortisone creams) and moisturizers prescribed by your doctor that are proven safe for pregnancy. Copyright ©1997 Anai Rhoads.
