  • Early HPTs and the hCG Shot

    Dear Anai,

I took a fact plus early pg test and tested on day 27 of my usual 28-30 day cycle. It was negative. I would normally take that as a negative, but I really feel pg. I did clomid this month, had an u/s on day 13 (showed 3 good eggs) and took hcg shot on day 13. We had timed intercourse and I just really feel like I may be pg.

How accurate are the early tests? I plan on testing again tomorrow (cycle day 29) if my period still doesn't come. How likely is it to get a negative result on cycle day 27 using an early pregnancy test if I were really pg? Are these "early pg test" really any better at detecting hcg than the regular pg tests that say to wait until 1st day of missed period? I appreciate any advice you could give me.

    Thanks,

    Robin

    Question:

Fact Plus and Fact Plus Early home pregnancy tests are not even rated in the recent Consumer Reports poll. Their quality measured below standard to reach to the list.

My guess would be that you got your hands on a faulty test. I say this because it takes upwards of 3 weeks for an hCG shot to leave your system if you have not conceived. The average wait time is 14 days, but there are cases where home pregnancy tests shown a light to strong positive up to 21 days after the initial shot.

Rather than wasting money on another HPT, I would suggest scheduling a blood test once you are late. A blood test is often the choice after one is subjected to an hCG shot, since HPTs may give you a false positive.

Thank you for writing Robin! Good luck on your blood test!
