Letter to the Editor: Anai Rhoads is a Threat to Society

29 May 2010

Dear Editor,

@VeganOutreach

Over the years, I have followed your work and the other essays. I understand that you can’t please everyone and in true form I have found some of your work favorable and some not so. I’m not a liberal so this says a lot.

This letter to the editor is not based on any particular piece but an overall observation of your work as an animal rights person. In essence, I find you, Anai Rhoads, a threat to society. Why? Because you are pushing an agenda that may never come to light. Your interest in helping animals is valiant but you are harming industries that employ real people. I am writing to you in the highest hope that you will end your campaign against us. We are not your enemy!

Eating animals began in the dawn of time and it will continue. Put your energy into helping people treat animals humanely. No one wants to see animal suffering so why not focus on that instead of slowly removing the screws from businesses that thrive on farming for a living?

The industry will not die because vegans want it to. It’s not a realistic goal or outcome. With respect, Ms. Rhoads you are complicating things.

You may or may not post this but it I know you will read this nevertheless.

LTE: A World Without Zoos

@City-Data

14 May 2010

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to an article posted entitled “A World Without Zoos”. The arguments presented were wonderful but I couldn’t help but notice comment “slips” by zoo supporters.

Jack Brown was quoted as saying, “We need to be educators, and we need to make a huge impact on our community in terms of public education.” I’d love to know what Jack was thinking by making this comment. Animals are not an educational tool, nor should they be used at all for our benefit. He also remarks how children love the zoo and learn from visiting one. Do they learn when they see a miserable animal? I’m sure they do.

Capin was quoted saying, “I’m sure it’s a horrific event for those who saw it, but people have short memories” about the trainer who was killed by the whale. Another comment that implies that we are all idiots who gawk at a death then forget all about it. The public remembers what happened. It’s in print and the stories live on forever.

What Anai Rhoads said about zoos was something I always felt too. They ARE prisons and whoever doesn’t know the definition of a prison needs to head over to a zoo and see for themselves. I once loved the zoo but I learned a long time ago that I can better entertain myself without seeing animals in such dire straits.

Thank you,

Rebeccah Ghiano, Kansas City, MO., USA
